With the rise in global awareness of the environmental impact associated with travel and tourism, Dubai has taken the ambitious step toward enhancing the sustainability of the sector through the introduction of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp (DST Stamp). The Stamp aims to encourage the adoption of green initiatives in the hotel sector, with the eventual goal of positioning Dubai as a leading sustainable tourism destination. The adoption of the DST Stamp also aligns with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 initiative and Dubai’s Economic Agenda ‘D33’.

Launched by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), the DST Stamp recognizes hotels that have demonstrated their compliance with the 19 sustainability requirements set out by the DET. The criteria are strict, focusing on areas such as energy efficiency, water conservation, waste management, and community engagement. Establishments must undergo a rigorous evaluation process, ensuring they meet international sustainability standards and contribute positively to Dubai’s environmental goals.

The DST Stamp has a three-tier system to classify hotels displaying the varying degree of compliance to the sustainability requirements – Gold, Silver and Bronze. By implementing initiatives that improve the culture of eco-consciousness at the hotel, significant strides can be achieved in moving to higher tiers.

Adopting measures to obtain the DST Stamp or to improve the current rating is beneficial for businesses and tourists alike.  The stamp helps environmentally conscious travelers make better choices by easily identifying sustainable hotels and experiences in Dubai. Whether it’s opting for a hotel that uses solar power or dining at restaurants focused on zero-waste practices, visitors can enjoy their stay with peace of mind. For businesses, the stamp not only recognizes their efforts but also enhances their reputation among a growing segment of eco-aware customers.
